GUIDELINES & EXPECTATIONS

Guidelines for Coaches & Parents

Coaches: Keep it Simple, Keep it Fun

Young players learn best in an environment free from pressure and over-complicated tactics. A skilled coach should focus on developing confidence and enjoyment while subtly introducing the following key ideas:

  • Encourage players to play with their heads up

  • Promote positive, forward play — dribbling or passing with purpose

  • Motivate players to shoot at every realistic opportunity

  • Teach players to create passing options by losing defenders with quick changes of speed and direction

  • Discourage reckless or clumsy tackles; focus on smart, safe defending

Parents: Your Role is Vital

Modern small-sided soccer reflects the free-spirited joy of street soccer — where the game was about fun, freedom, and creativity, not trophies or pressure. Today, adults must ensure soccer remains a source of joy, not stress.

✅ Parents SHOULD:

  • Give positive and encouraging feedback

  • Be patient with all players' development

  • Support evenly matched games for fairness and fun

  • Emphasize good behavior and sportsmanship

  • Applaud and support good play from both teams

❌ Parents MUST NOT:

  • Shout abuse at players, referees, or coaches

  • Focus on results over participation and effort

  • Use technical terms or instructions during the game — leave coaching to the coaches

At Strikers, we believe soccer should be fun, safe, and developmental for every child. With the right support from coaches and parents, our players will not only become better athletes — they’ll also grow in confidence, respect, and love for the game.
